Roddy: What does the surname Roddy mean?

The last name Roddy is a Scottish surname believed to have originated in Caithness in the 12th century. It is derived from the Old Norse and Gaelic personal name Roderick, which meant "famous ruler".

The earliest form of the name appears as Rodeth and is a patronymic name meaning "son of Rodeth". It is composed of two Old Norse elements, "rodr" meaning "famed," and "øy," a diminutive suffix. Over time, Rodeth evolved into Roddy.

Historically, the Roddy family was associated with local landownership in the Scottish Highlands. The family owned a castle in the early 13th century. The Roddys were part of the Caithness clan system and were allied to powerful clans like the Sutherlands, Mackintoshes, and Sinclairs.

In later centuries, the Roddys moved to mainland Scotland and Ireland. They were particularly influential in the 19th century when the Roddy family was involved in several eminent business ventures across Scotland, including linen production in Belfast.

The name Roddy is still used in Scotland today, particularly in central Scotland and the Highlands. It is also quite common in Northern Ireland. As well as being associated with landownership and business, the name Roddy also reflects the traditional strength and intelligence of its original Caithness bearers.

My 3X great grandfather was Thomas Roddy born in Carlow Ireland. He came to Canada with his wife Joanna Doyle and 3 sons John, Martin, and James. They 1st came to a small community near Guelph Ontario Canada. John and James went to the United States while Thomas, Joanna and their son Martin (my 2X great grandfather) moved to a village called Doyle's Corners which later the name changed to Maynooth and it was about time the last name change to Rody. With all that being said you can add RODY to the surname list.
