Unveiling the Ancestral Journey: A Personal Exploration of the Surname Türk Through iGENEA DNA Test

Family name Türk

Using the iGENEA DNA test, I embarked on a fascinating exploration of my ancestral heritage linked to the surname Türk. The scientific exploration provided an extensive understanding of the origins and possible migratory paths of my forefathers, painting a rich tapestry of my genetic history.

As fascinating as my personal journey through the iGENEA DNA test has been, it has revealed remarkable insights about my ancestral lineage and the surname Türk. This scientific exploration of my heritage has given me a deeper understanding of where I come from, and the migratory paths my forefathers may have taken across the continents.

The iGENEA DNA test takes thorough and comprehensive consideration of historical, archaeological, and genetic aspects to reproduce a broad overview of an individual’s comprehensive genealogical study. The test looked at my Y-chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA – genetic markers that are passed on relatively unchanged across generations.

The test report showed that my direct paternal lineage belongs to haplogroup R1b, which is primarily found across Western Europe. It suggests that male ancestors with the surname Türk predominantly originated from this area. On the other hand, my maternal lineage falls under haplogroup H, typical of the European population since prehistoric times.

The surname Türk, though seemingly indicative of Turkish origin, could have multiple sources. Historically, the name may be associated with 'Turkish' or 'people from the east.' The iGENEA test confirmed the diversity in the origins of this surname. While my paternal side suggests a dominant Western European origin, it doesn't completely refute possible ancestral connections to Central Asia or the Middle East.

Additionally, I learnt that 'Türk' could be an occupational surname, referring to people who played the 'Turk's game', an ancient board game, leading me to consider an angle of historical profession associated with my surname.

The in-depth analysis of my ancestral journey, epitomized by my surname Türk, has added a depth to my sense of self-understanding; it emphasises the complexity and fluidity of human migration and the intertwining of cultures and civilizations.

U. Türk
