The DNA of an American President

Franklin Pierce was the 14th President of the United States of America, serving a term from 1853 to 1857. During a period of intense political turmoil and discontent that eventually culminated in the Civil War, Pierce had the difficult task of governing an increasingly divided country.

Franklin Pierce was born on November 23, 1804, in Hillsborough, New Hampshire. His father, Benjamin Pierce, was a distinguished veteran of the War for Independence and also governor of New Hampshire. His mother, Anna Kendrick Pierce, came from an influential family.

Despite a distinguished lineage, Franklin Pierce emerged as a political figure who was constantly controversial. After graduating from law school in the early 1820s, he entered politics. Pierce served in the U.S. Senate for several years and was also the youngest president of it. He was often referred to as "Young Hickory of the Granite Hills," indicating his political leanings - he was a supporter of Democrat Andrew Jackson, who was known as "Old Hickory."

Although his presidency was marked by controversy and devastating political divisions, Pierce also had significant accomplishments. Under his leadership, negotiations were initiated with Japan that eventually led to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Also during his tenure, the Nebraska-Kansas Act was passed, which hoped to resolve the dispute over slavery in the new territories, but ultimately led to more conflict.

Franklin Pierce married Jane Means Appleton in 1834. The two had three sons, but all died young. Their youngest son, Benjamin, died in a train accident shortly before Pierce took office. This tragic incident and other personal problems, including Pierce's alcoholism, significantly overshadowed his tenure and influenced his political actions.

After his term ended, Pierce retired from public life and spent the rest of his life in New Hampshire. He died in 1869 of cirrhosis, a disease likely caused by his excessive drinking.

In summary, Franklin Pierce, despite his controversies and mistakes, still plays a remarkable role in American history. His leadership during a time of great political uncertainty and his contribution to the advancement of U.S. diplomatic relations have secured his place in history. In the process, his genealogical roots shed additional light on this important figure and allow us to gain a deeper understanding of his origins and character.

Franklin Pierce belonged to haplogroup R-M343 (subgroup R-DF96) in the paternal line.
