The DNA of a samurai

Hattori Hanzō, whose real name is Hattori Masanari, was a famous samurai and military strategist during the Sengoku period, the War of the Provinces, in Japan. Born in 1542 and died in 1596, he was also an important ninja maker, leader of a clan of ninja spies, and commander of a specialized ninja force commonly known as "Iga".

Hanzō is known in Japanese history and culture as an extremely capable and loyal samurai who played an important role in the unification of Japan under Tokugawa Ieyasu. His unique skills and exploits secured him a legacy in the annals of Japan's military history and made him a legendary figure in the country's pop culture.

Hanzō was born into a family that served the House of Matsudaira, later known as the Tokugawa Shōgunate. His birth family, the Hattori, were vassals of the Matsudaira and specialized in warfare and strategy. They belonged to the warrior class of samurai and were based in provinces such as Mikawa, Tōtōmi, and Suruga.

Among Hanzō's significant accomplishments is his role in saving the then-young Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1582, Oda Nobunaga, the overlord of Ieyasu, was killed in Kyoto by the rebellious general Akechi Mitsuhide. Nobunaga's death threw the entire region into chaos, and Ieyasu found himself in a dangerous position, being far from his home province of Mikawa. Hanzō, who was loyal to Ieyasu, ensured Ieyasu's safe passage through enemy territory, allowing him to return to Mikawa. This act of loyalty and bravery strengthened Hanzō's position and made him a valued advisor to Ieyasu.

Hanzō died at the age of only 55 and it is believed that he died of an unknown natural cause. After his death, his legacy remained present not only through his amazing exploits, but also through his son, Hattori Masanari. According to traditional accounts, the latter took command of the Iga ninja fighters and served the Tokugawa clan just as loyally.

In modern times, Hattori Hanzō is best known for his portrayal in movies, books, and video games. He is often portrayed as a mystical and almost supernatural ninja warrior who possesses tremendous abilities and intelligence. Although these depictions involve a certain poetic license, they help to maintain Hattori Hanzō's legendary status and memory of his deeds.

In summary, Hattori Hanzō is a significant figure in Japanese history and culture. He is a symbol of loyalty and bravery that is still alive in modern Japanese and world pop culture, and has been perpetuated through the legends and myths that have spun around his person.

Hattori Hanzō belonged to haplogroup O-M 175 (subgroup O-SK1700) in the paternal line.
