The DNA of the Saudi dynasty

The Saudi dynasty, officially known as the House of Saud, is the ruling royal family of Saudi Arabia, descended from Muhammed ibn Saud, the founder of the First Saudi State. Over the course of more than 270 years, this originally small nomadic tribe grew into a large and complex monarchy.

The House of Saud originated with Emir Muhammad ibn Saud, the dynasty's chieftain and founder of the first Saudi state in 1744. His rule grew out of an alliance with Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, a religious leader and founder of strict Wahhabi Islam. Together they founded the first Saudi kingdom, whose power was backed by religious legitimacy. Over the centuries, this dynasty expanded and consolidated its power until the proclamation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932 by Abdulaziz ibn Saud, better known as Ibn Saud.

Ibn Saud, the pioneer of the modern Saudi dynasty, initiated crucial modernization processes and laid the foundation for the Saudi state as we know it today. He fathered many sons, six of whom became kings of Saudi Arabia in succession: Saud, Faisal, Khaled, Fahd, Abdullah, and the current King Salman. This line has been maintained by the dynastic tradition, according to which the throne is passed on to the sons of the founder of the kingdom. This method has so far prevented younger generations from ascending to the throne, although this has changed with the appointment of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a grandson of Ibn Saud, as heir to the throne.

The Saudi dynasty has a deep, intertwined relationship with religion. Its political legitimacy is intertwined with the Wahhabi movement, which grew out of the alliance of Muhammad ibn Saud and Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. It has led to controversial positions and actions in the past, including the destruction of religious sites and the enforcement of strict religious rules. A key aspect of current Saudi policy is the tension between modernizing and liberalizing the kingdom and preserving religious and cultural traditions.

In recent decades, the House of Saud has instigated countless social and economic reforms, posing challenges to the kingdom both internally and internationally. Despite these challenges, the Saud dynasty has maintained its position as a leading political force in the Arab world and plays an important role in the global geopolitical context.

Overall, the Saudi dynasty is a significant example of a royal family whose influence extends beyond national borders. Its position as custodian of Islam's two holiest sites, Mecca and Medina, gives it religious significance, while its control over much of the world's oil reserves gives it considerable economic and political power. It maintains its central role in the Arab and Muslim world despite internal and external challenges.

The Saudi dynasty belongs to haplogroup J-M304 in the paternal line.
